The Meru National Park is one of the lesser explored parks of Kenya, a recommended location for the traveller who wishes to experience the truly wild Kenya outside of a tourist circuit. This park features exquisite landscapes of various types, from open savannahs to the greenest of riparian forests along the Tana and Meru Rivers. In addition to elephants, buffalo, leopards and lions, visitors to this park have the opportunity to also see the ‘special 5’, five extremely rare animals present in only a few parks north of the equator: the gerenuk, Grevy’s zebras, reticulated giraffes, the Somali ostriches and the oryx. Inside the park there is a 44 square kilometre Rhino Sanctuary dedicated to the conservation of white and black rhinoceros. The Meru park became famous after the release of the bestselling book and award winning film ‘Born Free’, which chronicles the lives of George and Joy Adamson and Elsa the Lioness, who is saved and eventually freed in this area.

Day 4: Samburu National Reserve

Early morning game drives in the reserve. Breakfast in the lodge. Mid-morning at leisure in the lodge. Lunch at the lodge. In the afternoon enjoy extensive game drives in the reserve and return to the lodge at dusk for dinner.
The Samburu, Shaba and Buffalo Springs are part of a National Nature Reserve. Shaba is the most eastern and wildest of the three, in fact, there are only two lodges in this area, and therefore, visitors who choose to stay in this reserve are granted the privilege of being “one of the few” in an isolated, wild and abandoned land.
It is a hilly country dotted with kopjes, isolated rocky hills, that alternates between dry arid zones and green areas that fall along the Ewaso Nyiro River, where Doum Palms grow. There are several other important water sources that are used by animals during the dry season, offering visitors the chance to see them up close. The reserve is also sadly known as the place where Joy Adamson was murdered by poachers in 1980 while she was working on a project to release Penny, a leopard raised in captivity. The title of her last book was ‘The Queen of Shaba’, and there is a monument and a small museum dedicated to her memory.
The Samburu region is largely populated by a tribe of the same name, the Samburu tribe has neolithic origins which interlace with those of the Masai, with whom they have many ancestral and linguistic ties. They are semi nomadic pastoralists who herd mainly cattle but also keep sheep, goats and camels, and during a safari, it is possible to see them accompanying their animals to rivers, which is allowed since the area is a reserve and not a national park.

Olpejeta is a 24,000 acre private game ranch near the Mount Kenya national park and sitting astride the Equator. Guests to Sweetwaters enjoy magnificent views across the plains to the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya. In the ranch there is also a Chimpanzee Sanctuary and a sanctuary for the endangered black Rhino. The ranch boasts all the “Big 5” game – Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Elephant and Buffalo. It is also home to over 400 species of birds and a host of plains game. In this private reserve, guests enjoy many special activities not permitted in most other national parks and reserves such as game walks, night game drives, camel rides and meals in the bush. Afternoon game drives in the conservancy. Visit the Chimpanzee and the Baraka rhino sanctuaries.

Day 6: Olpejeta – Lake Nakuru National Park

Breakfast then check out and depart. Skirt the Aberdare mountain ranges and descend into the Great Rift Valley where great game viewing awaits you. Lunch will be served at a lodge in Lake Nakuru national park after which you will explore this birders’ paradise in your vehicle. This park surrounds Lake Nakuru, a shallow alkaline lake famous for the millions of pink flamingoes who flock here year round. The park is a favorite with both locals and visitors. Besides the rich and varied bird life this is a popular place to encounter leopard. Waterbuck are usually sighted along the lake shore; two species are resident here and this is the home of the Rothschild’s giraffe. Lions, baboons, buffalos, monkeys, warthogs, impalas, Reedbucks and elands are also resident. However, the main attractions are the rhino. The park had been designated a rhino sanctuary and is entirely fenced. Both black and white rhinoceros are thriving here and this is one of the best places in Kenya to observe them.

Day 7: Lake Nakuru – Maasai Mara

Full buffet breakfast in the lodge then checkout. Drive a south-westerly direction via Narok town to the world famous Maasai Mara Game Reserve. Check in to your camp in time for lunch. Mid-afternoon there will be time to settle in and relax. In the afternoon enjoy extensive game drives in the reserve and return to the lodge at dusk. Maasai Mara is pristine African wilderness. The reserve is world famous for its vast assemblage of plains’ game together with their assorted predators. It is perhaps the only area remaining in the world where one may see wildlife in the same super abundance as existed years ago. It is the stage for the annual migration – millions of Wildebeest and Zebra follow the timeless ritual of migration, moving from Serengeti in Tanzania to Maasai Mara in search of fodder as they have done since time immemorial.
The reserve is home to the largest population of lions to be found in Kenya, as well as huge herds of elephant, Topi and other antelopes. The area is bisected by the Mara River which every now and then comes into tumultuous flood, and which is boarded by a section of luxurious riverine forest. Hippo laze in its waters, while drowsy looking crocodiles sunbathe on the banks, mouths agape. Despite the marvels of the annual migration, the Mara is rich in resident wildlife and birds.
