Day 1: Nairobi – Meru National Park

Meet by our representative at the airport or at your Nairobi hotel for a safari briefing. Join your driver guide and embark on your Kenya safari, driving north across the equator to Meru National Park. Check in to your lodge and have lunch. In the afternoon set out for game drives in search of Africa’s BIG Game in the park.
Meru national park is one of the most scenically diverse of Kenya’s wildlife sanctuaries where the park has a unique variety of habitats in a comparatively small area. The area is dry, however, 13 permanent rivers streaming from Mount Kenya cut through its width to pour into river Tana. From far, the lush riverine forests along the rivers look like green ribbons wrapped across the brown land. On Tana River itself, colonies of Monkey and flocks of parakeets inhabit the dense forest. Hippo and crocodile are common and are often seen sunning themselves on the broad beach-like sandpits. On clear mornings, the snow capped jagged peaks of Mt. Kenya can be seen to the south-west, but the most picturesque sight is sunset over the Nyambene hills. The reserve is world famous as the home of Elsa-The lioness that was returned to the wild by famous conservationist, Joy Adamson. The park is alive with a plethora of birds and game include lion, cheetah, elephant, cape buffalo, zebra, giraffe, different kinds of Monkeys to name just a few.

There will be time to settle in after lunch before you set out to explore this rugged but beautiful reserve, famous for the ‘Samburu 5’. These are 5 species of animals that are only found north of the equator and mostly in this Samburu reserve: Grevvy’s zebra, the long-necked gerenuk, retiuculated giraffe, besia oryx and the Somali ostrich. Other game include elephant, buffalo, impala, gazelle, the long necked Gerenuk, the beautiful kudu, dik dik, lion, cheetah, leopard and orix. Samburu National Reserve is situated in the arid and rugged part of the country, north of Mount Kenya and the equator; it is watered by river Uaso Nyiro which apart from supporting life in this dry area, is home to an impressive population of crocodiles, usually seen sunning themselves on the banks. Along the riverbed the rare Doum Palms dot the otherwise scrubby, dry landscape adding to the beauty of the scenery. Rolling hills form a stunning backdrop to the landscape making this a photographer’s paradise.

The Masai Mara National Reserve is a large game reserve. It is well known for its rich wildlife fauna, including lions leopards and cheetahs, and is one of the most visited parks in Kenya. The landscape here is a never-ending succession of rolling hills and lush plains that are an ideal habitat for large mammals and, therefore, their prey. There are a large number of lions in this park, and it is often even possible to see them in action during a hunt! In fact, from August to September/October there is the possibility of experiencing one of the most awe-inspiring events that nature has to offer: the great wildebeest migration. It is truly one of the greatest transhumant experiences on the planet; nowhere in the world is there a movement of animals as immense as the great migration where over two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle leave the Serengeti (Tanzania) for the greener pastures and flowing waters of the Masai Mara and its River Mara, creating an incredibly magic and indescribable landscape. Here, the visitor can glimpse the true meaning of ‘the circle of life’ in all its completeness, from the birth of young wildebeest, to the death of the older and weaker, a true fight for survival that is both thrilling and moving at the same time.
