If you’re travelling with the entire family, we have some tried-and-true recommendations for an unforgettable vacation. We take our own families on safari trips, so we know just how to plan an African adventure that is suitable to a variety of ages, tastes and needs. We want your family trip to be safe and secure, professionally managed and tailored to your family’s preferences.
The destinations that we most highly recommend for family travel are South Africa, Botswana, Tanzania and Kenya. Our favourite kid friendly itineraries combine classic game viewing safaris in malaria-free destinations with family villas on tropical beaches. You may also choose a stay in a residential villa combined with privately guided tours or even take a family road trip. Whatever style fits your family, we are here to help you find the proper resources to realize an African experience that is safe and memorable for all the right reasons.
Whichever country you choose, we’ll make sure your vacation features reliable family accommodation with plenty of outdoor fun and age-appropriate activities including game drives, animal track identification and other educational activities, fishing, horseback riding and quad excursions.
Infants up to 5 years old
For families with children in this age range, we arrange high quality family safaris in malaria-free areas mainly in South Africa. Many of the safari lodges offer baby-sitting services so that parents may go out on game drives or enjoy a private dinner. There are also children’s clubs offering arts and crafts and other games.
Children aged 6 to 12
The horizons literally expand for the family travelling with children in this age group. We recommend itineraries offering bushwalks, which are safe and highly educational. Children especially enjoy ticking animals and birds off their scavenger hunt lists. There are also junior ranger training programs for young nature enthusiasts, and safari guides can take them to hides overlooking watering holes where budding naturalists can draw and paint the animals that visit the hole.
Children aged 13 and above
Generally children 13 and above are able to join most adult activities and those with a passion for wildlife can spend more time with their safari guide (and even sit beside the guide during game drives) to enhance their African adventure.
Family accommodation
The safari camps and lodges have family rooms – usually in the form of larger rooms, two connecting rooms or luxury tents with a common bathroom. There are also several stunning safari houses and villas, complete with private vehicles, safari guides, chefs and butlers, that may be rented by one or more families travelling together.
