Day 2: Amboseli National Park

Situated 250 km south-east of Nairobi, Amboseli is famous for its big game and its beauty. Open plains, areas of yellow barbed acacia woodland, rocky patches, lava streams, thorn bushes, swamps and marshes are some of the different eco-systems found here. Majestically dominating the area, rising above a saucer of clouds, is “Africa’s rooftop,” the snow capped Mount Kilimanjaro (5895 meters). The views of this mountain greet visitors from every part of the park. Here the pastoral and proud Masaai people herding their cattle have lived in harmony with the wildlife since days of the past. This was the beloved local place of Earnest Hemmingway and Robert Ruark, where the sparkling white snows of Kilimanjaro have been a picturesque backdrop to one of Kenya’s most spectacular displays of wildlife – lion, elephant, leopard, cheetah, buffalo, wildebeest and hosts of plains game – making a perfect photographer’s paradise. Swamps and springs fed by underground rivers from the melting snows of the mountain provide permanent watering places for the game while a nearby dried up lake bed produces a shimmering image in the day’s heat. Today you will enjoy early morning and afternoon game drives in the park. Breakfast, lunch and dinner in the lodge.

Day 3: Amboseli – Mount Kenya National Park

Breakfast in the lodge then check out. Drive past Nairobi to Mount Kenya National Park and check in to your lodge in time for lunch. The lodge is set in the lower forests of the mountain, the highest in Kenya and second highest in Africa after Kilimanjaro. This impressive volcanic mountain rises up to an elevation of 5,199 m. above sea level. The mountain is holy to the local Kikuyu tribe whose name for it means ‘Mountain of Brightness’ and is considered the official residence of the Supreme Being. Mt. Kenya National Park has several distinct forest zones which include areas of giant lobelia and groundsel, cedar and dense bamboo forest. To reach the utmost peak requires mountaineering skill but the lower ranges offer opportunities for enjoyable walks and explorations.
Your lodge tonight is a tree lodge where guests spend their time watching animals as they come to drink at the lodge’s flood-lit waterholes. There is a resident spotter with whom you can place an order to buzz your room when an interesting animal appears. The thick verdant forests below the moorlands are home to an abundance of game which includes elephant, rhino, buffalo, leopard, bongo, bushbuck, duiker, giant forest hog, and several species of monkey. Lions inhabit the moorlands, while leopard and wild dog are seen in the lower zone. Birdlife thrives here with more than 350 different species already identified. Climbing this 5199 meter high mountain is possible for fit individuals and reaching the summit normally takes at least 7 days.

Day 4: Mount Kenya National Park – Lake Nakuru National Park

Breakfast then check out and depart. Drive into the Great Rift Valley where great game viewing awaits you. Check in to your lodge and have lunch.
This park surrounds Lake Nakuru, a shallow alkaline lake famous for the millions of pink flamingoes who flock here year round. The park is a favorite with both locals and visitors. Besides the rich and varied bird life this is a popular place to encounter leopard. Waterbuck are usually sighted along the lake shore; two species are resident here and this is the home of the Rothschild’s giraffe. Lions, baboons, buffalos, monkeys, warthogs, impalas, Reedbucks and elands are also resident. However, the main attractions are the rhino, the park had been designated a rhino sanctuary and is entirely fenced. Both black and white rhinoceros are thriving here and this is one of the best places in Kenya to observe them. Afternoon game drives in the park.

Day 5: Lake Nakuru – Maasai Mara

Full buffet breakfast in the lodge then checkout. Drive a south-westerly direction via Narok town to the world famous Maasai Mara Game Reserve. Check in to your camp in time for lunch. Mid afternoon there will be time to settle in and relax. In the afternoon enjoy extensive game drives in the reserve and return to the lodge at dusk for dinner. Maasai Mara is pristine African wilderness, it is world famous for its vast assemblage of plains’ game together with their assorted predators. It is perhaps the only area remaining in the world where one may see wildlife in the same super abundance as existed years ago. It is the stage for the annual migration – millions of Wildebeest and Zebra follow the timeless ritual of migration, moving from Serengeti in Tanzania to Maasai Mara in search of fodder as they have done since time immemorial. The reserve is home to the largest population of lions to be found in Kenya, as well as huge herds of elephant, Topi and other antelopes. The area is bisected by the Mara River which every now and then comes into tumultuous flood, and which is boarded by a section of luxurious riverine forest. Hippo laze in its waters, while drowsy looking crocodiles sunbathe on the banks, mouths agape. Despite the marvels of the annual migration, the Mara is rich in resident wildlife and birds.
